Steps in designing the process

Step 2: Piping design

Once the types of equipment and quantity of material flowing through the process are determined, the piping system connecting all the equipment needs to be decided

It includes determining size of the pipes which will be able to carry the required quantity of material

Assignment

A pipe needs to be designed which has to supply water required for one of the stages in the ethyl acetate production process. You need to determine minimum diameter this cylindrical pipe needs to have, based on following conditions:

1) Volume flowrate of water in the pipe = 0.005 m3/s

2) Maximum speed of water in the pipe = 2 m/s

Pipes of only specific diameters are available in the industry and client does not want to get pipe custom made. So based on minimum pipe diameter calculated, you will have to select an appropriate commercially available pipe diameter.

(Assume water to behave as ideal fluid)

How to find pipe diameter?

Step 1

Find minimum cross-sectional area of pipe needed, using given volume flowrate and maximum speed of water in the pipe

Step 2

From cross-sectional area find the diameter of pipe needed, using simple geometry

Minimum cross-sectional area of pipe needed is 0.0025 m2

Determine minimum diameter of pipe

Minimum diameter of pipe needed

m

Enter Value

Enter upto 4 decimal places, example : 1.1234

*Numeric Value Required

Minimum diameter of pipe needed

=

Enter Value

Enter upto 1 decimal place, example : 25.2

*Numeric Value Required

Correct Answer

Cross-sectional area of pipe = π X (diameter/2)2

Minimum diameter of pipe needed (m)

= 2 X √(Cross-sectional area of pipe/π)

= 2 X √(0.0025/π)

= 0.0564

Minimum diameter of pipe needed (mm)

= 0.0564 X 1000

= 56.4

Your answer is correct. Well done!

Minimum diameter of pipe needed is 56.4 mm

Pipes of following diameters are commercially available

Select the appropriate diameter based on your calculations :

50mm

53mm

55mm

57mm

59mm

*select a value

Correct Answer

As minimum diameter is calculated to be 56.4mm, pipe of closest higher diameter should be selected which is 57mm.
